Part 8. Cognitive illusions.

چکیده
Evolution’s view Many optical illusions have evolutionary survival value, and thus many are hard-wired. We can train ourselves to be less influenced by such illusions, but we can’t eliminate them entirely. The analogous errors of the cognitive system are what I call cognitive illusions (or distortions in orthodox cognitive behavioural therapy literature). Overgeneralization is a common cognitive illusion. It’s 20 000 BC and you’ve just witnessed your ex-wife being eaten by a sabretoothed tiger. You’d do well to overgeneralize about large cats with big teeth, although it might cost you the companionship of a great cave pet in your retirement years.

No Evidence of Narrowly Defined Cognitive Penetrability in Unambiguous Vision
The classical notion of cognitive impenetrability suggests that perceptual processing is an automatic modular system and not under conscious control. Near consensus is now emerging that this classical notion is untenable. However, as recently pointed out by Firestone and Scholl, this consensus is built on quicksand. In most studies claiming perception is cognitively penetrable, it remains uncle...
متن کاملPersuasion Technology Through Mechanical Sophistry
We introduce an approach to digital persuasive technology. In this approach, computing machines are given the power to persuade by generating what we call illusory arguments. These arguments derive their power in significant part by exploiting the empirical fact that humans succumb to cognitive illusions. The persuasion technology we present can be used for weal or woe, but at least for now, we...
متن کاملCognitive Framing Illusions and Consumer Rationality
This paper attempts to determine if consumers realistically behave rationally when making choices under cognitive framing illusions. In addition, we demonstrate how cognitive framing illusions can be utilized by firms to earn profit. The paper furthermore details why the framing 7illusion variable cannot be displayed by itself – to work, it must be shown with the rest of the bargain. The double...
متن کاملVisual illusions affect planning but not control.
Much debate has arisen over how to account for the pattern of effects of visual illusions on action - that is, the findings that illusions affect actions in some circumstances but not others. I propose that this pattern can best be explained by postulating that visual illusions affect the planning of actions but do not affect the on-line control of actions. Strong evidence for this viewpoint co...
متن کاملCognitive Illusions Reconsidered
Behavioral economists have done a great service in connecting psychology and economics. Up to now, however, most have focused on cognitive illusions and anomalies, in order to prove the descriptive failure of neoclassical economic models. Some conjectured that “mental illusions should be considered the rule rather than the exception” (Thaler, 1991, p. 4), thus questioning the assumption that pr...
